New Publications in the Microbiome World

Vascular traffic control of neutrophil recruitment to the liver by microbiota-endothelium crosstalk
Zucoloto et al. (with IMPACTT Director & Platform 1 Lead Dr. Kathy McCoy, as well as Education & Mentorship Leads Dr. Markus Geuking & Dr. Braedon McDonald, as senior authors). Cell Reports. 16 May 2023.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers used in vivo imaging of neutrophil trafficking in germ-free and gnotobiotic mice to show that the intestinal microbiota guides neutrophil homing to the liver in response to bloodstream infection. They further show that this homing is mediated by the microbial metabolite D-lactate, which improves neutrophil adhesion in the liver.

Reconstruction of the personal information from human genome reads in gut metagenome sequencing data
Tomofuji et al. Nature Microbiology. 15 May 2023.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers investigated whether human DNA present in fecal samples can be used to reconstruct personal information by shotgun metagenomic sequencing. They analyzed the metagenomes of 343 individuals, and were able to re-identify individuals from matched genotype data with 93.3% sensitivity. Sex and ancestry could also be predicted in 97.3% and 98.3% of samples, respectively. These results invite a discussion of best practices for the deposition of gut metagenome data, with consideration for individual privacy.
