IMPACTT TEAM & NETWORK NEWS

Dr. Anita Kozyrskyj (Platform 2 Lead) and Dr. Laura Sycuro (Platform 4 Lead), along with Dr. Maria Ospina (nominated PI, Queen's University) received a CIHR Project Grant to study how social factors, together with the maternal gut microbiota, shapes mental health and neurodevelopment. This unique cohort will be based out of Edmonton and will capitalize on well-established community partnerships to recruit geographically and socioeconomically diverse populations, as well as Black, Immigrant, and Metis women. Congratulations!

Dr. Laura Sycuro (Platform 4 Lead) received an NSERC Discovery Grant to examine the adhesion/invasion behaviors of human microbiota with a systems biology approach. Congratulations!

Dr. Daniel Castañeda Mogollón joins Dr. Laura Sycuro’s lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow on May 15th. Dr. Castañeda Mogollón received an Eyes High Fellowship to study mechanisms through which the gut microbiome contributes to Type I Diabetes and will be working on the CMI2-funded project co-led by Dr. Laura Sycuro (Platform 4 Lead), Dr. Kathy McCoy (IMPACTT Director & Platform 1 Lead), Dr. Pere Santamaria (University of Calgary), and Dr. Jayne Danska (IMPACTT Sex & Gender Lead). Welcome, Dr. Castañeda Mogollón!

GlobeCorr: interactive globe-based visualization for correlation datasets
Arab et al. (with Platform 5 Co-Lead Dr. Fiona Brinkman as senior author). Bioinformatics Advances. 06 Jan 2023.
Highlights: GlobeCorr.ca is a web-based application designed to provide user-friendly, interactive visualization and analysis of complex omics datasets. “[It] creates a dynamic visualization using ribbons to represent positive and negative correlations, optionally grouped by domain/category (such as microbiome taxa against other metadata). GlobeCorr… provides a simple method for users to visualize and summarize complex datasets.” Visit globecorr.ca to get started!

New Publications in the Microbiome World

Investigating the oral microbiome in retrospective and prospective cases of prostate, colon, and breast cancer
Nearing et al. (with CMI2 Team Grant Lead Dr. Morgan Langille as senior author). npj Biofilms and Microbiomes. 01 May 2023.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers investigated the potential for the human microbiome to be used as a biomarker for prostate, breast, and colon cancer. They collected saliva samples from 89 retrospective and 260 prospective cancer cases, matched to non-cancer controls, and sequenced them using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. No significant differences in alpha diversity were found among sample types, and most beta diversity measures were non-significant, except one distance metric in retrospective breast cancer cases, and three distance metrics in colon cancer. Differential abundance analysis identified several taxa that were associated with a previous cancer diagnosis for all three cancer types, depending on the tool used. Based on their results, the authors conclude that it is unlikely that reliable oral biomarkers for breast and prostate cancer exist, but do recommend further research into the oral microbiome and colon cancer.

Cross-talks between gut microbiota and tobacco smoking: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study
Fan et al. BMC Medicine. 28 Apr 2023.
Highlights: There is evidence that tobacco use (including smoking) can contribute to perturbations in the gut microbiota composition. In this study, the researchers used a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to integrate summary data of previously-published genome-wide association studies (GWASs) to identify causal associations between tobacco smoking and gut microbiota composition. They confirmed results from previous studies that smoking affected three taxa (Intestinimonas, Catenibacterium, and Ruminococcaceae) and found new evidence to suggest that an additional 13 taxa may be affected by tobacco smoking. They also found evidence that suggests that smoking behaviours could be a potential consequence of specific taxa abundance, including Actinobacteria, likely involving neurotransmitter-associated metabolites.
