NEW PUBLICATIONS

New Publications in the Microbiome World

Dysbiosis of a microbiota–immune metasystem in critical illness is associated with nosocomial infections
Schlechte et al. (including IMPACTT Director/Platform 1 Lead Dr. Kathy McCoy and Education & Mentorship Co-Lead Dr. Braedon McDonald) Nature Medicine. 09 Mar 2023.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers collected rectal samples and conducted single-cell profiling of systemic immune and inflammatory responses in a prospective longitudinal cohort study of critically ill patients. They found that the gut microbiota and systemic immunity function as an integrated metasystem, where dysbiosis is coupled to impaired host defense and increased frequency of nosocomial (healthcare-associated) infections.

Microbiota alters the metabolome in an age- and sex- dependent manner in mice
Brown et al. (including IMPACTT Director/Platform 1 Lead Dr. Kathy McCoy and Platform 4 Co-Lead Dr. Ian Lewis). Nature Communications. 11 Mar 2023.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers used liquid chromatography mass spectrometry to study the metabolomes of germ-free, gnotobiotic, and specific pathogen-free mice, while also evaluating the influence of age and sex on metabolite profiles. They found that microbiota and age explained similar amounts of variation in the metabolome of some samples (urine, serum, peritoneal fluid), but age was the primary driver of metabolite profile variation in the liver and spleen. Sex was a significant factor at all sites except the ileum, but explained the least amount of variation.
