Microbiome Canada

A reminder to sign up for MicrobiomeCanada.ca, a website that connects people interested in microbiome research across Canada. Microbiome Canada is being jointly developed by Dr. Fiona Brinkman’s lab (Platform 5 Co-Lead) and Dr. Morgan Langille’s (CMI2 Team Grant Lead) and Dr. Robert Beiko’s (IMPACTT Co-Applicant) labs. If you have any questions or comments, please contact [email protected].

IMPACTT TEAM & NETWORK NEWS

Dr. Adriana Buzatto began a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. She will be establishing a lipidomics program to investigate the relationship between lipids and biochemical pathways, diseases, and physiological reactions. The Buzatto lab is seeking dedicated students at all levels - contact the lab for more information. Dr. Buzatto will be working closely with Dr. Ian Lewis (Platform 4 Co-Lead), who is Principal Investigator of the Calgary Metabolomics Research Facility, a Silver Sponsor of this year’s Having IMPACTT Symposium.

IN THE MEDIA

Microbiome Insights, a Gold Sponsor of our Having IMPACTT 3 Symposium, published a blog post about their experience at our symposium. Read the full review here.

The Rosell® Institute for Microbiome and Probiotics by Lallemand, a Platinum Sponsor of our Having IMPACTT 3 Symposium, posted about their experience at our symposium on LinkedIn. See their posts here and here.

NEW PUBLICATIONS

Mucosal Immunology Highlight

A reminder that our Microbial IMPACTT review series is available open access in Mucosal Immunology. There are currently 5 reviews in this series.

Mucosal Immunology, a Bronze Sponsor of our Having IMPACTT 3 Symposium, is the official publication of the Society for Mucosal Immunology (SMI). It aims to provide a forum for both basic and clinical scientists to discuss all aspects of immunity and inflammation involving mucosal tissues. New Publications in the Microbiome World

Very early life microbiome and metabolome correlates with primary vaccination variability in children
Shaffer et al. mSystems. 23 Aug 2023.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers set out to better understand why some infants do not develop protective responses to vaccines administered in early life. They followed 101 subjects during their first two years of life, with enrollment starting within 3 weeks of birth. Vaccines were administered at 2, 4, and 6 months, with boosters administered post 1 year. Stool and nasal samples were collected periodically for microbiome profiling and plasma/serum was collected for metabolome and proteome profiling. Blood samples were collected at 2 months, 1 year, and 2 years to measure antibody response against vaccination antigens. They found that at 2 months of age, evenness of genera in the stool microbiome samples, as well as phenylpyruvic acid abundance in serum, correlated with lower vaccine responses at 1 year of age, but no other diversity measures in stool or nasopharynx microbial communities were associated with vaccine response at any of the sampling timepoints. Antibiotic use at birth was also negatively associated with vaccine response at 1 year. These results suggest that the time from birth up to 2 months of age may be critical for future vaccine response, and the researchers suggest that targeted interventions in this window of time may be most effective.

Microdiversity of the vaginal microbiome is associated with preterm birth
Liao et al. Nature Communications. 17 Aug 2023.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers investigated the link between the maternal vaginal microbiome and preterm birth (PTB) outcomes. They analyzed the microbial communities of 40 women who experienced spontaneous PTB (705 unique samples) as well as 135 term controls. They found that the vaginal microbiome in the PTB samples was more genetically diverse at the species level, and had increased richness and diversity of antimicrobial resistance genes. They further found that Gardnerella spp. drove this higher diversity, especially in the first half of pregnancy. They also showed that Gardnerella spp. underwent more frequent recombination and stronger purifying selection in genes involved in lipid metabolism. Their results suggest that evolutionary processes acting on vaginal microbes may play a role in adverse pregnancy outcomes such as PTB.
