NEW PUBLICATIONS

New Publications in the Microbiome World

Small intestinal resident eosinophils maintain gut homeostasis following microbial colonization
Ignacio et al. (including Education Leads Dr. Markus Geuking & Dr. Braedon McDonald, and IMPACTT Director and Platform 1 Lead Dr. Kathy McCoy as lead author). Immunity. 15 June 2022.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers investigate the function of intestinal eosinophils. They found that intestinal epithelial cells released IL-33 in a microbiota-dependent manner, which led to eosinophil activation, and revealed a critical role for eosinophils in facilitating mutualistic interactions between the host and microbiota.

Long-distance relationships - regulation of systemic host defense against infections by the gut microbiota
Schlechte et al. (including Education Leads Dr. Markus Geuking & Dr. Braedon McDonald as lead authors). Mucosal Immunology. 22 June 2022.
Highlights: In this review, the authors review and discuss new insights into how commensal microbes that are spatially restricted to the gut lumen can engage in long-distance relationships with innate and adaptive immune cells at systemic sites to fortify host defenses against infections.

Supplementation with a probiotic mixture accelerates gut microbiome maturation and reduces intestinal inflammation in extremely preterm infants
Samara et al. (including IMPACTT Co-Applicant Dr. Jens Walter, and Platform 2 Co-Lead Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta as lead author). Cell Host & Microbe. 11 May 2022.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers tested the effects of probiotics on gut microbiome assembly and immunity in extremely premature infants. They found that daily administration of the probiotic mixture accelerated the transition into a mature, term-like microbiome with higher stability and species interconnectivity.
