New IMPACTT Publication

Immunometabolism and microbial metabolites at the gut barrier: lessons for therapeutic intervention in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Michaels & Madsen (with Platform 3 Lead Dr. Karen Madsen as senior author). Mucosal Immunology. 13 Jan 2023.
Highlights: In this IMPACTT review, the authors provide an overview of how microbial metabolites can influence metabolic reprogramming and immune responses at the gut barrier, and how these pathways could be utilized for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and other human autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

New Publications in the Microbiome World

Questioning the fetal microbiome illustrates pitfalls of low-biomass microbial studies
Kennedy et al. (including Platform 2 Co-Lead Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta, CMI2 Team Grant Lead Dr. Michael Surette, & IMPACTT Co-Applicant Dr. Jens Walter). Nature. 25 Jan 2023.
Highlights: The question of whether a fetal microbiome exists is highly debated. In this study, the researchers looked at recent studies that characterized microbial populations in human fetuses, and their analysis suggests that these detected microbial populations are likely the result of contamination, either during sampling, DNA extraction, or DNA sequencing. These results highlight the challenges of sequence-based microbiome studies when dealing with low- or no-biomass samples.

Breastfeeding enrichment of B. longum subsp. infantis mitigates the effect of antibiotics on the microbiota and childhood asthma risk
Dai et al. (including Platform 2 Lead Dr. Anita Kozyrskyj and CMI2 Team Grant Leads Dr. Stuart Turvey, Dr. Meghan Azad, & Dr. Padmaja Subbarao). Med. 04 Jan 2023.
Highlights: Early exposure to antibiotics can disrupt the development of the infant gut microbiome and can increase the risk of asthma in childhood. In this study, the researchers looked at whether breastfeeding influenced the risk of pediatric antibiotic-associated asthma, using data from the CHILD cohort. They found that breastfeeding had a protective effect on the risk of asthma in infants who are given antibiotics, and that this protection is accompanied by an enrichment of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis in the gut.
