NEW PUBLICATIONS

New Publications in the Microbiome World

Commensal microbiota from patients with inflammatory bowel disease produce genotoxic metabolites
Cao et al. Science. 28 Oct 2022.
Highlights: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) increases the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), and members of the gut microbiota can also produce small-molecule genotoxins that exacerbate this risk. Morganella morganii is enriched in the gut microbiota of both IBD and CRC patients, and in this study, researchers discovered that it produces indolimines, which are small-molecule genotoxins that can cause DNA damage. They used a gnotobiotic mouse model of colon cancer and found that indolimine-producing M. morganii increased colonic tumour burden, but a mutant form of M. morganii that was unable to produce indolimine did not. The results suggest that indolimines may contribute to intestinal tumorigenesis.

Depression and fatigue in active IBD from a microbiome perspective—a Bayesian approach to faecal metagenomics
Thomann et al. BMC Medicine. 17 Oct 2022.
Highlights: Depression and fatigue are considered common extraintestinal symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly during active disease. In this study, researchers set out to investigate whether associations exist between taxonomic and functional microbiota profiles, and severity of depression and fatigue symptoms in 62 patients with active IBD. They found that depression and fatigue were associated with lower abundance of short-chain fatty acid production and distinct pathways involving glycan, carbohydrate, and amino acid metabolism. They also found 3 bacterial genera associated with depression, and 4 genera associated with fatigue. Their results suggest that microbiota-directed therapeutic approaches in IBD patients could result in alterations of extraintestinal symptoms.
