IMPACTT TEAM & NETWORK NEWS

Dr. Markus Geuking (Education Lead) and Dr. Simon Hirota (co-applicant) received a Crohn’s and Colitis Canada 2022 Grant-in-Aid of Research. They will investigate how shared antigenic structures between the intestinal microbes and systemic viral infections affect colitis. Read more about it here. Congratulations!

Dr. Anita Kozyrskyj (Platform 2 Lead) had three students present their research at the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) World Congress 2022 in Vancouver, Canada. Maryam Paraktoon (MSc student) gave an oral presentation on “Pre-eclampsia, emergency cesarean delivery and Bifidobacterium levels in infant gut microbiota”; Sabrin Bashar (PhD student) gave a poster presentation on the “Impact of prolonged hospitalization on the development of the gut microbiome”; and Nicole Rodriguez (MSc student) gave a poster presentation on “Sex-specific associations among infant food and atopic sensitizations and infant socio-emotional development”.

New IMPACTT Publication
Thomson et al. (with IMPACTT Director and Platform 1 Lead Dr. Kathy McCoy as senior author). Mucosal Immunology. 05 Sep 2022.
|
Highlights: This IMPACTT review discusses the different approaches used to modulate microbial complexity that are available to study host-microbe interactions, and describes how different mouse models have been used to answer distinct biological questions, covering the entire microbial spectrum, from germ-free to wild.

New Publications in the Microbiome World
Daoust et al. (including CMI2 Team Grant Lead Dr. André Marette as senior author). Gut. 02 Sep 2022.
|
Highlights: In this study, researchers compared the impact of two housing conditions (gnotobiotic-axenic vs specific-pathogen free [SPF]) on the metabolic outcomes of germ-free mice that received fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). They found that the mice housed under gnotobiotic-axenic conditions showing decreased liver weight and hepatic triglyceride accumulation compared with the control group, while the mice housed under SPF conditions showed an opposite outcome, with exacerbated liver steatosis. These results suggest that housing conditions play a large role in influencing gut microbiota composition and function post-FMT, which can lead to different phenotypes, and the authors recommend better standardization of FMT experiments to ensure reproducibility and translatable results.

Ianiro et al. Nature Medicine. 15 Sep 2022.
|
Highlights: In this meta-analysis, researchers compared stool microbiomes from fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) studies with publicly available data that used shotgun metagenomics, resulting in a total of 1,371 samples across 24 cohorts and multiple diseases. They found that FMT recipients were more likely to experience clinical success when donor strain engraftment was higher, and that on average Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria species had higher engraftment than Firmicutes species. Using cross-dataset machine learning, they were able to predict donors that might lead to better post-FMT outcomes.

Dekkers et al. Nature Communications. 23 Sep 2022.
|
Highlights: In this cross-sectional study, researchers characterized the gut microbiota and plasma metabolome of 8583 participants aged 50-64, using deep metagenomic sequencing and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography linked with mass spectrometry. They found that the gut microbiota was able to explain up to 85% of the variance of individual plasma metabolites. They created an online resource (GUTSY Atlas) describing 997 associations between alpha diversity and plasma metabolites, as well as 546,819 associations between specific gut metagenomic species and plasma metabolites, including novel associations between external factors and the gut microbiome. This resource can be used as the basis for future studies targeting the link between the microbiota and plasma metabolites.
