New Publications in the Microbiome World
Lam et al. Cell Reports. 2 November 2021
Highlights: In this study, researchers used CRISPR-Cas9 to manipulate the genomes of E. coli bacteria living within mouse gastrointestinal (GI) tracts via engineered bacteriophage. The researchers hope this proof-of-concept study will lead to targeted therapeutic approaches that are species- or even strain-specific in the future.

Yap et al. Cell. 11 November 2021
Highlights: This new study challenges the popular hypothesis that the gut microbiome causally contributes to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, researchers performed a stool metagenomics study on 247 samples from the Australian Autism Biobank and the Queensland Twin Adolescent Brain project, and found "negligible direct associations between ASD diagnosis and the gut microbiome." Instead, the researchers suggest that restricted diet preferences associated with ASD may lead to lower microbial diversity.

Weinstein et al. PNAS. 23 November 2021
Highlights: In this study, researchers characterized the diets and microbiomes of wild woodrats belonging to 7 species of the genus Neotoma located across the southwestern United States. They then brought some of these wild animals into captivity to determine how captivity altered their microbiomes. They found that in nature, geography, diet, and species explained approximately 50% of the observed microbiome variation among the population. In captivity, microbiome composition changed, but this change was species-specific, highlighting the importance of genetics in determining microbiome composition.
