NEW PUBLICATIONS

New IMPACTT Publication

Beta-diversity distance matrices for microbiome sample size and power calculations — How to obtain good estimates
Jiang et al. (including IMPACTT Director and Platform 1 Lead Dr. Kathy McCoy, Sex & Gender Lead Dr. Jayne Danska, Platform 2 Lead and Co-Lead Dr. Anita Kozyrskyj and Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta, IMPACTT Co-Applicant Irina Dinu, and Platform 5 Lead Dr. Celia Greenwood as senior authors). Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal. 27 April 2022.
Highlights: In this method article, the authors demonstrate the challenges researchers face when performing sample size and power calculations for microbiome study design. They describe and illustrate three strategies for obtaining realistic distance matrices. Using data from the American Gut project, the authors provide tables of observed distances, as well as R codes for generating similar matrices in other datasets. This code and illustrative distance tables are provided by the IMPACTT Consortium as a resource to the microbiome research community.

New Publications in the Microbiome World

The impact of the gut microbiota on T cell ontogeny in the thymus
Nanjundappa et al. (including Education Lead Dr. Markus Geuking as senior author). Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences. 04 Apr 2022.
Highlights: The intestinal microbiota influences the development and function of both local and peripheral organs, as well as the systemic immune system. However, less is known about how the intestinal microbiota impacts T cell ontogeny in the thymus. In this review, the authors discuss recent findings in the emerging field of the gut-thymus axis, and highlight the current questions and challenges in the field.

“Molding” immunity—modulation of mucosal and systemic immunity by the intestinal mycobiome in health and disease
Gutierrez et al. (including Platform 2 Co-Lead Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta and Education Co-Lead Dr. Braedon McDonald as senior authors). Mucosal Immunology. 26 Apr 2022.
Highlights: The mycobiome (fungal microbiome) is an important modulator of mucosal and systemic immunity. In this review, the authors discuss current knowledge on the factors that govern host-fungi interactions in the gastrointestinal tract, and immunological outcomes in both mucosal and systemic compartments.

Longitudinal body mass index trajectories at preschool age: children with rapid growth have differential composition of the gut microbiota in the first year of life
Reyna et al. (including Platform 2 Lead Dr. Anita L. Kozyrskyj, and CMI2 Team Grant Leads Dr. Wendy Lou, Dr. Stuart E. Turvey, Dr. Padmaja Subbarao, & Dr. Meghan Azad) International Journal of Obesity. 15 Apr 2022.
Highlights: In this study, researchers used group-based trajectory modeling to identify BMI trajectories from birth to 5 years of age in 3059 children. They found that infants with a rapid growth trajectory were less likely to have been breastfed, and gained less microbiota diversity in their first year of life. The results highlight the causative link between growth rate/weight gain and the microbiota, and support a novel avenue of research targeted on tangible interventions to reduce childhood obesity.

The metabolic potential of the paediatric-onset multiple sclerosis gut microbiome
Mirza et al. (including Platform 5 Co-Lead Dr. William Hsiao). Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders. 23 Apr 2022.
Highlights: In this study, researchers examined the metabolic potential of the gut microbiome in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. MS patients had different microbiome-related metabolic potentials compared with healthy controls, including higher breakdown of lipopolysaccharide molecules, but lower resistant starch metabolism.
