Composition and Associations of the Infant Gut Fungal Microbiota with Environmental Factors and Childhood Allergic Outcomes. Boutin RCT, et al. mBio. 2021 Jun - The authors characterized the gut mycobiota in 343 infants from the CHILD Cohort Study, defined associations among gut mycobiota community composition and environmental factors for the development of inhalant allergic sensitization. Using these data, they built a predictive model for inhalant atopy status at age 5 years.

Dietary fat and low fiber in purified diets differently impact the gut-liver axis to promote obesity-linked metabolic impairments. Daniel N, et al. Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol. 2021 Jun - In this study, the authors used a mouse model to determine the key dietary factors affecting gut microbiome and how they contribute to obesity and other metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. See the press release.

Changes in the gut microbiome associated with infliximab in patients with bipolar disorder. Bharwani A, et al. Brain Behav. 2021 Jun - In this randomized clinical study, the authors explore the effects of a novel treatment for bipolar disorder (BD), infliximab, on the gut microbiome.

Prebiotic enriched exclusive enteral nutrition suppresses colitis via gut microbiome modulation and expansion of anti-inflammatory T cells in a mouse model of colitis. Healey GR, et al. Cell Mol Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2021 Jun - In this study, the authors examined the effects of exclusive enteral nutrition inulin-type fructans on colitis development, the gut microbiome and CD4+ T cells using an adoptive T cell transfer model of colitis.

Probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation in the treatment of behavioral symptoms of autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review. Tan Q, et al. Autism Res. 2021 Jun - This systematic review aims to provide an overview and critically evaluate the current evidence on the efficacy and safety of probiotic, prebiotic, synbiotic, and fecal microbiota transplantation therapies for core and co-occurring behavioral symptoms in individuals with ASD.

Handling of spurious sequences affects the outcome of high-throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon profiling. Reitmeier S, et al. ISME Communication. 2021 Jun - The authors highlight the existence of fictitious sequences in 16S rRNA dataset and propose solutions for meaningful results.

The maintenance of microbial community in human fecal samples by a cost effective preservation buffer. Wu C, et al. Sci Rep. 2021 Jun - Performing shotgun metagenomic sequencing, the authors demonstrated that microbial consortia in human fecal samples were preserved in self-made preservation buffer.

Design of synthetic human gut microbiome assembly and butyrate production. Clark RL, et al. Nat Commun. 2021 May - The authors developed a model-guided approach to design synthetic human gut microbiomes to produce the health-relevant metabolite butyrate.
