Peng et al. [including Platform 2 Lead Dr. Anita Kozyrskyj and CMI2 Team Grant Leads Dr/ Stuart Turvey & Dr. Padmaja Subbarao]. Gut Microbes. 04 Mar 2024.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers investigated whether the gut microbiota plays a role in the increased risk of childhood obesity due to maternal smoking during pregnancy. They followed 1,592 infants from the CHILD study cohort, with environmental and lifestyle data collected prenatally and throughout the first three years of life, and stool samples collected at 3 and 12 months for high-throughput sequencing and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. They found that quitting smoking prior to pregnancy resulted in a similar risk of offspring being overweight as compared to non-smoking controls, but both smoking during pregnancy and quitting smoking during pregnancy carried a higher risk. However, they also found that exclusive breastfeeding until 3 months of age may alleviate these risks. Maternal smoking in pregnancy significantly increased Firmicutes abundance and diversity, potentially contributing to an increased risk of childhood overweight and obesity through excessive butyrate production.

Korpela et al. [including IMPACTT Co-Applicant Dr. Jens Walter]. Allergy. 29 Feb 2024.
Highlights: In this study, the researchers were interested in whether reduced microbial exposure associated with COVID-19 social distancing measures affected the development of allergies in infants born during this time. They collected fecal samples from infants in the CORAL study cohort at 6 (n=351) and 12 (n=343) months for 16S sequencing, and compared them to previously-published 16S sequencing data collected prior to the pandemic. They found that the CORAL infants had higher relative abundance of bifidobacteria, and lower relative abundance of environmentally transmitted bacteria such as Clostridia, as compared to pre-COVID-19 cohorts. They also found that plant based foods during weaning positively impacted microbiota development. Overall, they did not find an increase in allergen sensitization, food allergy, or atopic dermatitis in the COVID-19 infants, suggesting that vertically transmitted bacteria and appropriate dietary supports may be more important than exposure to environmental microbes alone for protection against allergic diseases in infancy.
